What is a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a series of credit card sized single board computers, which can do everything a normal PC can do. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python.
The Raspberry Pi is developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote teaching of basic computer science in schools and in developing countries.

A bit of history

The Raspberry Pi Foundation was formed in 2008 after a group of academics and technicians—Eben Upton, Rob Mulins, Jack Lang, Alan Mycroft, Pete Lomas, and David Braben—were concerned about students’ declining interest in computer sciences. Their solution was to come up with a low-cost computer to inspire children and make it more accessible.
The idea was that these tiny computers would allow for easy basic programming. Its low power usage and cost were expected to make Pis more easily available in classrooms.
Today, a few of the original members still act as the Foundation’s trustees, while Upton has taken charge as CEO and project lead.

The Story behind the name of Raspberry Pi

The "Raspberry" is a reference to a fruit naming tradition in the old days of microcomputers. A lot of computer companies were named after fruit. There's Tangerine Computer Systems, Apricot Computers, and the old British company Acorn, which is a family of fruit. Pi is because originally we were going to produce a computer that could only really run Python. So the Pi in there is for Python. Now you can run Python on the Raspberry Pi but the design we ended up going with is much more capable than the original we thought of, so it's kind of outlived its name a little bit.

What Operating Systems Can Run On a Raspberry Pi?

The Pi can run the official Raspbian OS, Ubuntu Mate, Snappy Ubuntu Core, the Kodi-based media centers OSMC and LibreElec, the non-Linux based Risc OS (one for fans of 1990s Acorn computers). It can also run Windows 10 IoT Core, which is very different from the desktop version of Windows. This can make Raspberry Pi a very powerful single board computer.
